International Paper Sizes in Printing
In offset printing, production usually starts with large press sheets, often around A1 size. Multiple book pages are arranged on each sheet in a layout known as a “signature.” Once printed, these sheets are folded, trimmed, and bound together to form the finished book or printed product. The A-series paper sizes follow the international ISO 216 standard. Each size is half the area of the one before it, maintaining the same proportions.
For example, A2 is half the size of A1, A3 is half of A2, and A4 is half of A3. The same pattern continues through A5, A6, and A7. This standardized sizing system helps printers arrange multiple pages efficiently on larger sheets, reducing paper waste and overall production costs. Printing several pages together in signatures is far more economical than producing each page separately. Although ISO 216 paper sizes are widely used worldwide, countries such as the United States and Canada commonly use different formats, including Letter and Legal. Standard paper dimensions still offer important advantages across the printing industry. They simplify equipment compatibility, material sourcing, storage, shipping, and production planning.
